Black tourmaline or Schorl tourmaline is part of the boron silica family of minerals. Tourmaline crystals are found in granite and granite pegmatites which are magma bodies deposited close the earth’s crust and eventually uncovered through surface erosion or continental uplift. The black color is a result of high sodium-iron concentrations during crystallization.
This piece is unique in that most of the tourmaline crystals are present towards one face of the rock. And tourmaline's abundance on that face shows how the crystals grow through each other giving it this interlocking look. The small crystals are a telltale sign of rapid crystallization due to a change in the surrounding environment.
This piece is like a Dalmatian but in rock form. The speckles of black against the light colored rock really make this piece eye catching! The contrast is ridiculous!
On a metaphysical level, black tourmaline is a powerful stone for protection against negative energy of all kinds, as well as being a strong spiritual grounding stone.
