The excellent preservation of the Green River fish fossils is usually attributed to a combination of factors. 1) a cold period during the Eocene that caused dead fish to sink faster due to a less inflated swim bladder. 2) The depth of the lakes and the consequent anoxic conditions. The composition of the limestone indicates that the layer these fish were discovered in was formed in deep water far from shore.

This fish fossil is so cool! It’s perfect for using for educational purposes or to add to your growing collection of fossils. It’s even wonderful for those who are just getting interested in fossils and the world of geology in general.
