Petrified wood is ancient wood that has been fossilized through the process of permineralization. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment & protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment, replacing the original plant material with Silica, Calcite, Pyrite, or another inorganic material such as Opal.
Petrified wood comes from the Greek root petro, which means rock or stone, with literal meaning 'wood turned into stone'. Petrified Wood is used to help connect with the earth & nature. It is a good way for city dwellers to keep nature nearby & encourages people to respect their environment & live in harmony with the planet.
Petrified Wood looks great as a decoration or for specimen collection. This piece would make a perfect coffee table piece or to give a woodsy vibe to a nature themed room!
